Josh Traptow
Executive Director
Josh Traptow brings over a decade of experience in nonprofit leadership, public policy, and civic engagement to his role as Executive Director of the Alberta Real Estate Foundation.
Prior to joining AREF, Josh served as Chief Executive Officer of Heritage Calgary for close to a decade, where he championed the preservation and promotion of Calgary’s diverse and evolving heritage. During his tenure, he led the organization through a period of strategic growth, expanded its public programs, and fostered meaningful partnerships across government, industry, and the nonprofit sector.
Josh is a respected leader in Alberta’s civic and cultural landscape, with a background in governance, government relations, and external affairs. He is known for his collaborative approach, strategic mindset, and passion for building stronger communities through innovative and inclusive initiatives.
Deeply engaged in the community, Josh currently serves as the Chair of the Board of Directors for the Women in Need Society (WINS) and has been a proud volunteer with the Calgary Stampede for over 15 years. He also serves on the Board of Governors and the Calgary Regional Advisory Board for the Alberta Motor Association.
His contributions to public life have been recognized with several honours, including being named one of Avenue Calgary’s Top 40 Under 40 Class of 2024, receiving the SAIT Outstanding Young Alumni Award and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond and Platinum Jubilee Medals.
Josh is excited to bring his leadership, vision, and commitment to community to AREF—guiding the Foundation’s efforts to fund and support projects that positively impact Albertans and demonstrate real estate’s potential for public good.
Sarah Stuebing
Manager, Grants Program
Sarah is a communications and community investment professional with a Bachelor of Arts Degree, majoring in Communications. Hailing from Red Deer, she moved to Calgary eleven years ago to finish her degree at the University of Calgary. She promptly fell in love with the city’s downtown centre, where she now lives, spending her time wandering in search of art, culture, sarcasm, and all things caffeinated. Her work experience includes working in the Red Deer Advocate newsroom, coordinating public and private training for North America with SMART Technologies, fundraising for The Brenda Strafford Society for the Prevention of Domestic Violence, and finally to her current position with the Alberta Real Estate Foundation. She now spends her time helping connect community organizations, quality ideas, and timely funding.
Kara Tersen
Manager, Grants & Administration
Kara brings a wealth of relevant experience and leadership to the Foundation in fund development, communications and marketing, and engagement for local, provincial, and national charitable organizations. Born and raised in rural Alberta, and having worked for Nature Conservancy Canada, Kara has a deep knowledge of, and appreciation for, our entire province. Kara has grant evaluation and approval experience as a Grant Review Committee member with Alberta Ecotrust Foundation. She has significant knowledge and understanding of the granting process through grant development, writing, and application as a certified fundraising professional. She has extensive experience working with boards, both as a staff resource and as a board member.
Teigan Kopec
Director, Operations & Communications
Teigan is a communications professional with a focus in public and nonprofit sectors. She holds a BA in Communication Studies with Honours from the University of Calgary. As an experiential learner, adventuring and communicating is Teigan’s method of discovery, of self and others, and sharing. Teigan brings humour, lightheartedness, and a genuine capacity and interest in working with others. She believes that quality exists in details, in preparedness, and in the ability to encourage people’s strengths to foster a collaborative environment. When she’s not expertly delivering communications, you’ll find her adventuring with family and friends anywhere from a local park to mountainside.
Birgit Becker
Coordinator, Administration & Finance
Birgit is a multi-talented bookkeeper and administrator with experience in nonprofit, public, and private sectors. She holds a BA in German Literature from the University of Calgary. Birgit has always had affinity for math and numbers, which led her to continued studied in accounting. Though born in Germany, Birgit has lived in Calgary for most of her life and considers it her hometown. She is happily married to her husband, Paul. When she is not buried in the books, you can find Birgit practicing photography, reading, hiking, walking, and befriending all the dogs.
Maria Granados
Communications & Engagement Specialist
Maria is a Calgary-based communications specialist bringing a passion for research, engagement, and storytelling to her work. Earning a Bachelor of Arts in Geography with a certificate in Sustainability Studies from the University of Calgary, Maria honed her skills in crafting impactful climate communication strategies, particularly within the nonprofit sector. Her expertise lies in values-based messaging, allowing her to effectively engage stakeholders on a variety of issues. When away from work, you can find Maria in the barn or on the trails taking in the majestic Rockies on horseback.
